Maroela Lodge

Recommended Route

We go out past Dainfern and then onto the N14. Go on towards Krugersdorp and at the first traffic light, turn right keeping on the N14. Continue on the N14 to the T junction. Turn right at the T junction and the bear right onto the R563 towards Maropeng. Turn left onto the R400 (signposted to Maropeng). Continue on R400, passing Maropeng on your right, to the stop street. Turn right into the R24. This takes you into Magaliesburg. As you are exiting Magaliesburg, bear left onto the R509 which takes you through Derby and on to Koster. In Koster turn right, keeping on the R509, towards Swartruggens. Continue on the R509 to the T junction. Turn left into Swartruggens.

(There are potholes on this route but not bad when we last drove it in July)

An alternative is to go out past Dainfern and then follow signs to Lanseria and thereafter Sun City. This will take you past the Pecanwood Golf Estate and over the Hartebeespoort Dam on the Western side. From Hartebeespoort get on to the N4 toll road and stay on the toll road through Rustenburg to Swartruggens.

For Both Routes

From Swartruggens follow the N4 toll road to Groot Marico (29.6 km’s)
At this point you may choose the tar road or a shorter route with 32km’s of gravel.

THE TAR ROUTE

Groot Marico to Zeerust (37.1 kms)
In the middle of Zeerust you will see a turn-off to the right to Gaborone. Proceed towards Gaborone and the Kopfontein border post (85 kms)

THE SHORT ROUTE – the dirt road is heavily rutted and slippery if there has been rain so ok for a 4x4 but not recommended for a saloon car.
Follow the N4 over the bridge of the Groot Marico River up a hill to the turning to the right to Skuinsdrif. This is a tar road. Follow the tar road, passing Riekerts dam on your right, to the turn off to the left to Nietverdiendt. This Nietverdiendt turn off is about 33.4kms from Groot Marico.
At this point you will leave the tar road for gravel. There is only one cross road on the road and you must proceed over the intersection (i.e. don’t turn left or right).Proceed to the T junction (32 kms)
At the T Junction turn right onto the main road to Gaborone and Kopfontein (50.5 kms)

FOR BOTH ROUTES

Just before the Kopfontein Border post, there is a turn-off to Derdepoort and Tau Gate
Kopfontein to Tau Gate (10.4 kms)
Turn into Tau Gate, inform the guard you are going to Maroela Lodge and he will radio the lodge to confirm your arrival. Drive through to Maroela, following the signs to Tau. Maroela is the first Lodge on the right (there is a Maroela sign at the entrance). Drive up to the electric gate and push the button for the gate to open. (If you get to Tau Lodge, you have gone too far!)
It will take you between 4 and 4 ½ hours to get to the Lodge depending on traffic.
